The Area
These vinyards are located around a small village in the
Aude Departément (Languedoc-Roussillon Région) of France, due south of the
historic medival walled city of Carcassonne.
The Historically the area was called the Razès, part of an
independent
state under the Viscounts of Carcassonne, until it was annexed to
France following the war against the Cathars. Some people here still speak
Occitan, the Langue d'oc. All around the area are castles,
mountains, historic abbeys, churches, gorges, grottoes and spas. The town
lies in the very heart of Cathar Country, the location of some of the most
important and portentous events of medieval Europe, vestiges of which can
be seen everywhere. Many of the most famous Cathar sites are only a short
drive or cycle ride away as is the famous hilltop village of
Rennes-le-Chateau
