Amphoralis

Sallèles d'Aude
A museum of Gallo-Roman pottery located on the excavation site at Sallèles d'Aude, not far from the Canal du Midi. It overlooks the excavated remains of Roman ceramics workshops dating from the 1st to the 3rd centuries A.D. Roof tiles were made here, along with a variety of pots, including amphorae.
Opening Times:
1 October to 30 June: Tuesday to Friday 14:00-18:00. Saturday and Sunday 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-18:00.
1 July to 30 September: daily 10:00-12:00 and 15:00-19:00. Closed Mondays and 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.

Musée de la Chapellerie

Hat-making Museum, Near Narbonne, beside the Canal du Midi. 6500 hats and associated hat making equipment are on display. The collection spans the period from 1850 to the present day and includes military and ecclesiastical headgear, tradition, costume, and contemporary hats.

1 June to 30 September: 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-19:00
1 October to 31 May: 14:00-18:00. Sundays 14:00-19:00

Musée du Quercorb

The Museum of Quercorb (Aude département) covers the Quercorb region including its landscapes, traditions and handicrafts. It is in the village of Puivert, a short walk away from the Château. The Instrumentarium in the castle-keep is home to a collection of replica 14th century musical instruments (corresponding to stone cavings of the same instruments in the same room).

Museums in the Gard Départment (30)

Musée du Désert

The Museum of the Desert, in the centre of a typical Cevennes hamlet, illustrating the history of the Huguenots and Camisards in the Cévennes. THe House is the one where Rolland, leader of the Camisards, was born. Learn about the persecution of Protestants during the "Désert" period - the interval between the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the Edict of Toleration (1685-1787), and the War of the Camisards.
There are also 18th century artefacts and typical handicrafts from the area, as well as weapons and maps from the War of the Cévennes, and collections of bibles, engravings and paintings.

Museums in the Hérault Départment (34).

Musée de Lodève

The Museum of Lodève (Hérault), housed in the former mansion of the Fleury family. Collections are arranged in two large sections: Fine arts from the middle ages to the 20th century; and geology, palaeontology, prehistory, and archaeology: This section ocuses on the history of the Lodève region from 540 million years ago until the Gallo-Roman period.

Agropolis

The Agropolis Museum in Montpellier
The museum provides educational activities to students and members of research institutes in Languedoc-Roussillon. Subjects covered include ecology, agriculture and the history of food production. The Agropolis-Museum is intended to forge links between the scientific community and the public. It is also a research centre, providing information on the history of nutrition, with exhibits on agriculture and food-production.

‘Musée Languedocien’

Montpellier
The Museum of Languedoc is owned by the Montpellier archaeological society, founded in 1833. It houses collections of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artefacts, Greek and Etruscan ceramics, medieval sculpture and paintings, and local crafts and works of art relating to the history of the region.

The Museum is open daily (except Sundays and public holidays) 1400-1700 hrs. 1 July to 31 August.

Musée Fabre

The Fabre Museum, Montpellier
Paintings from the Italian School (Veronese) and the Spanish (Zurbaran), place this in the first rank of French museums. It was founded in 1825, funded by a donation from the Montpellier painter, François-Xavier Fabre (a pupil of the artist David). The collection of major works was assembled by local patrons such as Alfred Bruyas, a friend of Gustave Courbet. (A painting ‘Bonjour Monsieur Courbet’ formed the first in the collection.)

Museums in the Lozère Départment (48).

La Filature, Calquières Museum

The spinning mill, Langogne, Lozère You see ancient art of wool spinning at the Calquières Museum, the only centre for wool production in Languedoc-Roussillon.
This is a working museum - the mills turn and the machines hum. Educational but also enjoyable.
The museum passes on skills and knowledge through school visits and weaving workshops.

Tautavel Museum.

Tautavel (P-O)
European Centre for Prehistory in a village near which Tautavel Man lived 450,000 years ago in the caves of Caune de l'Arago. This museum traces the daily life of prehistoric hunters and their cultural evolution using interactive technology, 3D reconstructions, films, and models, together with the archaeological findings.

Hyacinthe Rigaud Museum of Fine Art

Perpignan (P-O)
This museum, located in a town house in the centre of Perpignan, displays a collection of paintings from the Catalan Gothic period Works by Rigaud, Clavé, Maillol, Manolo, Dufy, Picasso, Ingres, Géricault, Greuze, Bausil, Brune, Daura, Monfreid, Terrus and Violet.
The museum also houses a collection of contemporary works by 210 different artists. There are also paintings by Aléchinsky, Appel and Linström, supporting the museum’s claim to one of the finest collections of the paintings from the COBRA movementin the world.

Musée d’Arts et Traditions Populaires du Roussillon Casa Pairal

Casa Pairal Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of the Roussillon, Perpignan.
Nine themed rooms The museum gives an insight into rural and traditional Catalonia. It also contains the symbolic flame of St John, sacred to the Catalans. From the terrace, you have views over Perpignan, the Roussillon plain, the sea and Pyrenees, with the Canigou mountain standing out in bold relief.
