Stretching from the River Rhône to the Pyrenees ( Pirenčus, Pirineus, Pyrénées), the wine region is several times bigger than, for example, Bordeaux or the wine growing region of Australia.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region covers 27,400 square kms and five departments:
Some 160,000 hectares (400,000 acres) are planted with vines, which produce over 2 billion (2,000,000,000) bottles each year. Around 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres) produce AOC Wines . though by volume than 25% of production is AOC compared to 50% vin de pays and moe than 25% vin de table. 50,000 growers either bottle their own wine or send it to one of the 400 co-ops, which account for 70% of the regional production. There are 2,800 private wineries. |
