Holidays in the Languedoc: Working: The Château de St-Ferriol
The Château
de St-Ferriol is a Late Medieval - Early Renaissance château fort in southern France.
Built to be defensible, it used the latest mililary techniques
of the period, notably bastions placed at the four corners of a
rectangular building enclosing an inner court. These bastions
are furnished with gun ports (cannoniers) to provide covering fire to
all external walls.
Later changes,
made around 1600 made it a more comfortable residence for the barons
de St-Ferriol.
The château is situated on a ridge, overlooking valleys
to the North and South, in the heart of the village of St-Ferriol,
near the towns of Quillan and Esperaza in the Aude
département of the Languedoc-Roussillon
Région. It is within sight of Rennes-le-château, the
focus of numerous mysteries involving hidden treasure and
in the heart of Cathar Country.
The Château
de St-Ferriol is listed, and is currently undergoing renovation
so is not open to the general public. The owners need assistance with
the work in hand and with organic farming, and welcome volunteers all year round to
help with a range of work including gardening, woodland, restauration, archaeology, historical
research or fund raising.
